Amateur Fight Announced this Friday
Since Jamie’s fight got cancelled this past weekend, his coach and promoter has set up a fight for him for this coming Friday (March 12th) in Edmonton. This is an Amateur fight, so we will still have to wait for his professional debut, but his coach decided it was best for Jamie to get in the ring, even if it is an amateur fight, rather than wait another more or so until he could get his pro debut.
This of course is allowed because Jamie hasn’t yet had his first pro fight, and until he gets paid to fight (professionally) then he is still eligible to fight amateur.
Fridays fight will be in Edmonton, and it is a great opportunity for Jamie, as it is a Pro/Am card that will be televised (stay tuned for information on what channel and time it will be aired). As it stands now, only the Pro fights will be televised, but they are hoping that highlights of the best Amateur fights will also get aired. There will also be a bunch of promoters at the fight card, so Jamie will have a great opportunity to put on a good fight in front of these people, and his coach will have a great opportunity to network and hopefully set up a new fight for Jamie in the coming months.
Keep checking back, I will update later this week as to the fight venue and times, and about the television information.

Who the Heck is Joshua Clottey?

If you’re not a big boxing fan, it’s a valid question. In a division full of star power names, Clottey is an unknown to casual sports fans. This is a shame because he’s at the same level of talent as Mosley, Cotto, and Mayweather.
On a good night, Joshua Clottey can beat anybody at 147. He really is that good.
Clottey brings the total package to the table. He’s got speed, power, movement, a chin, and a turtle shell style defense. He also looks like Mr. Universe in the ring and always seems like the biggest welterweight out there.
Clottey comes from Ghana and trained in the same camp as Ike Quartey. Just like Pacquaio, he had a tough as nails upbringing where boxing was more of a necessity than a sport. He turned pro in his hometown of Accra, just a couple weeks after his 18th birthday. He would fight the majority of his first 14 fights in Accra and eventually won the Ghanian Junior Welterweight Title.
He would soon become an attraction in the UK and fought six times in London, including a DQ loss to Carlos Baldomir at age 22. You remember Baldomir right? The Argentinian that Floyd Mayweather treated like a punching bag for 12 rounds? Yeah, he was pretty good and beat a very young Clottey. Of course, Clottey was disqualified after being ahead on the scorecards.
Four years later, Clottey fought for the first time in America (a sixth round KO over Jeffrey Hill). He hasn’ fought outside the United States ever since. He was walking through opponents left and right on small cards and big undercards while building his resume for a title shot.
At age 29 with a 30-1 record, Joshua Clottey got his first world title shot at 147 against the most feared fighter in boxing: Antonio Margarito. This was back when Floyd Mayweather turned down an eight figure deal because he refused to fight Margarito. It was before we found out he was a cheater, we just thought he was a bad man.
Clottey wasn’t as scared as Mayweather and took the fight to Margarito. He was giving Margarito a boxing lesson and was running away with the first half of the fight. Then came the hand problems and Clottey was forced to fight with one hand. Margarito came on strong down the stretch and stole the decision. Margarito maybe (big maybe) won enough rounds, but 116-112 seemed a bit much. Eugene Grant’s 118-109 scorecard was just plain stupid though.
Either way, Clottey had fallen apart in his biggest fight to date. Still, people noticed how close the fight was and it was only a matter of time before he got another shot. He would win four straight fights (one against the legend Diego Corrales) before getting another world title shot against Zab Judah.
We knew Clottey had a strong chance to beat Judah, but nobody realized the beating he would lay upon him. Judah got his ass handed to him that night as Clottey won the title with a ninth rould technical decision. Clottey also established himself as an HBO staple that night, which we all know is more important than titles.
Unfortunately, he put himself in a bad spot. It was clear to all that he was on the same level as Cotto and Mosley but he didn’t have the elite star power they had. It seemed like nobody would fight Clottey, until Miguel Cotto stepped up to the plate. Not a shock to anyone who follows Cotto, he doesn’t avoid anyone.
Clottey/Cotto was a solid fight. Cotto was dominant early and put Clottey on his ass in the opening round. Clottey kept fighting strong and eventually opened a bad cut over Cotto’s eye. Cotto started retreating towards the middle rounds when Clottey started to attack that eye.
It looked as if Clottey was going to pull off the upset and launch himself into stardom, but what happened a the end of the fight is still up for debate. Some say that Cotto showed how good he is and starting picking Clottey apart while moving backwards (I tend to agree with this). Others say Clottey was on the cusp of his biggest win but didn’t have the heart to take it. Regardless, Clottey lost the split decision. He hasn’t fought since.
So Clottey tries to get a fight with Shane Mosley but it falls apart. He signs a deal to fight tough Carlos Quintana, but the card falls apart. Clottey is sitting in Ghana, stuck without a fight.
Than the phone rang. The promoter on the other end asked him if he was ready for his biggest pay-day ever. So he signed on to face Manny Pacquiao.
And that’s where we are now. Clottey has been in camp down here in Hollywood, Fla. preparing for the night of his life. Win or lose, this will be the defining moment of his boxing career. Does he have what it takes? Of course. He’s good enough to beat anyone in the world.

Boxing with Jesus

I have taken up boxing. Not a little punch here and a little punch there – real boxing. And, you know what? It hurts. I haven’t done any thing yet, but I am not liking all of the core work that is involved. There are sit ups, push ups, crunches, and medicine balls involved. I am taking lessons from Jesus Chavez – former lightweight IBF champion of the world. This is no joke.
I sound hard core, right? Not to be messed with, huh?
Well, anyone who knows me knows that I am the biggest wuss. I love to eat and lack a great deal of inertia. I am soft in all of the unattractive places. Yup…a real bad ass.
Why would I do something like this? I really don’t know. I am surprised myself that I had the gumption to even set up something like this. However, after careful and deep introspection, I have found an answer: I want to see if learning to box with a real champion can improve my boxing ranking on the Wii. Secondarily, I would like to shed some of the sludge that insulates me during the winter months, summer months, and months in between.
I am going to try to take what I learn from Jesus and put it to the real test. Until then, my abs ache, my arms won’t lift above my head, and I can’t sit up in bed. Not to mention that my knuckles are slightly roughed up and bloody.
I believe that I am showing real dedication to the sport…on the Wii, of course.
p.s. any one in the area that is interested in taking up boxing, Jesus is the man. He is super nice and has probably deduced how much of a couch potato I am, but doesn’t hold it against me. Call Run-Tex to get info.

Session 3-7-10
Just Matt and I today…
2 rds shadow boxing
10 rds boxing sparring
2 rds freestyle footworkAt this point feeling more than a little warmed up we decided to play some Tatar Kuresh:
We had I think six quick bouts…a nice add on drill for our normal sambo program.
We then broke out the shillelaghs for some back and forth training for a few rounds but honestly after that much boxing our shoulders were pretty shot and holding the stick in the high guard was getting pretty uncomfortable.
Next up mountain axe…we did about a half hours worth of work, going over some basics and working through a play. It has been a while since we got to play with the axes so this was a lot of fun.
We finished the session tossing around the Bulgarian bag and some kettlebells for a few minutes just to make sure I was truly exhausted.

Respect and Martial Arts
Hello All,
In this video Sensei Erik Paulson (www.erikpaulson.com) talks about respect and tradition in Martial Arts and MMA. I have trained in Martial Arts since 1992 and even though I trained in a style (Jeet Kune Do) that is very non traditional we placed a large emphasis on respect not only for Sijo Bruce Lee but for our fellow students as well.
One of the major knocks on MMA is that the fighters lack the respect and discipline that Martial Artists develope. I have personally seen this when training fighters and also in seminars. The reason for this I feel is the competitiveness of MMA and if you fight you need to establish your dominance right away. Trainers like Sensei Erik Paulson and Kru Greg Nelson teach this due to their Martial Arts backgrounds, also fighters like Lyoto Machida, Georges St Pierre show a high level of respect to their opponents.
Kru Greg Nelson has a saying that we use @ Synergy Martial Arts ” Practice with your partner not on your partner”. Being a good training partner is very important to the developement of your school, this is both for the Instructor and the student. If there is a high level of respect for one another this causes to seek to help out fellow students. When this happens the skill level of the school increases it is a win/win situation for everyone.
Watch this video and ask yourself how can you be a better training partner.

Honorio Dominates Hilario
Wilton Hilario showed grit and toughness but not much offense tonight in a lopsided defeat at the hands of veteran Martin Honorio. Though Hilario couldn’t muster a sustained attack at any point in tonight’s fight, he persisted in coming forward throughout the match. The pattern was that Hilario would cover up and bull forward until one of two things happened: (a) he got a shot at Honorio and threw one punch that may or may not land or (b) Honorio would freeze him with a counter and then whale away with extended combinations that left Hilario looking helpless. Hilario went down twice in the sixth round but popped up instantly both times.
The decision was unanimous, with scores of 120-106 (Fritz Werner) and 119-107 (Jose Cobian and Ray Corona). My scorecard and notes are below.
Round 1 – Martin Honorio 10, Wilton Hilario 9 – Honorio takes this round with busyness.
Round 2 – 10-9 – This round played out similarly but closer.
Round 3 – 10-9 – Hilario is not active enough. He needs to time Honorio and throw something!
Round 4 – 10-9 – Close round. Hilario lands some big shots, but again doesn’t throw enough.
Round 5 – 10-10 – More punches, more brawling, more infighting, Hilario’s best round so far.
Round 6 – 10-7 – Honorio knocks Hilario down twice, but Wilton is not hurt badly either time.
Round 7 – 10-9 – Hilario is getting outworked. He needs to put some punches together.
Round 8 – 10-9 – Hilario gets trapped on the ropes and pummeled. Target practice for Honorio.
Round 9 – 10-9 - More of the same. Honorio lands several shots at or after the bell.
Round 10 – 10-9 – Hilario’s punches have no snap. He lands one good left at the bell.
Round 11 – 10-9 – Hilario is stalking but not throwing. Honorio throws a combination after the bell.
Round 12 – 10-9 – Hilario comes out charging but can’t make hay. Honorio ends the fight clutching, grabbing, holding, shoving; anything to avoid the risk of a one-punch knockout.
Ending score: 120-107 Honorio

Men’s Game.
With the onset of cold weather have any boys, only one thought in mind: when you can play hockey. Hockey is very important for health. He tempers the lungs, strengthens the motor apparatus, hardens the lungs. In ice hockey a very important place was given the choice of Hockey Skates.
Clothes for hockey can be called slightly modified by knight’s armor. The most important condition – protection against attacks. Perhaps for this reason, the selection of hockey clothing paid much attention. The same approach and to purchase ammunition for other sports games – baseball.
In the U.S. today, the most popular baseball, as well as collectible baseball cards Baseball Card Collection. In baseball the game is not limited to, that is what contributes to the gaming experience. For this sport is not important: you are high or low you are strong or weak. Baseball simply requires coordinated movements. In baseball there is a small flurry of activity for all players and a long break.

Boxing?
My son threw me a curve ball this year. He requested to take boxing lessons.
I have no problem with that, it’s just that I never really considered that as an option. In Texas, you certainly thing football, baseball, basketball, even soccer or martial arts; but boxing was not a sport I thought he would like to try.
He has taken lessons two times now, and seems to be enjoying it. I am glad to see him work hard at this. He is our youngest of 3, and the least “athletic”, at least until now. I love watching my kids play their sports, so I was worried that I wouldn’t get to continue that self-serving past time with kid #3.
I asked around and found an ex-heavyweight professional fighter that is coaching at local gym, and we so far really dig him. He is very “northeastern” and is from Philly, the same city “you know who” is from (at least in the movie). I would not want to be on the wrong side of this gentleman.
Maybe boxing will stick. Rocky is one of my all-time favorite movies, so at the risk of sounding cheesey, I love the fact that my son has taken up such a fascinating sport. Of late, boxing has taken a back seat to its own controversy in addition to the MMA phenomenon. At least for now, we have gotten him away from a TV or computer and into something not only physically, but mentally challenging.
Time will tell….until next time,
Randy

IS MANNY PACQUIAO RETIRING?

MANNY PACQUIAO
Freddie Roach dropped a bombshell yesterday. The trainer for boxer Manny Pacquiao hinted that this weekend’s fight against Joshua Clottey may be last of the Filipino superstar’s career.
Pacquiao is once again running for political office in the Philippines. In his comments to the L.A. Times, Roach speculated that if Pacquiao was elected to the Filipino congress, THAT would be a full time job.
The 31-year-old Pacquiao is at the zenith of his professional boxing career. He is coming off wins over Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao has not lost a fight since 2004.
